Matacic made some excellent recordings of Russian music.

I recall listening to my dads cassette tape of Ted Greenfield covering this symphony, must have been broadcast late seventies.

      The then new Philharmonia/Ashkenazy won.

This was a favourite work in my youth, completely overdid it really. I’d like to hear Petrenko and revisit Jurowski.

The recent Tonhalle/Jarvi (P) is one of the most enjoyable to come my way in more recent times.

Try Jansons’s BRSO recording, c/wFrancesca da Rimini.

Sorry but I like the Hovis ad feel of the vibrato in the Horn solo of the Mravinsky...or as the guest reviewer slightly disparagingly calls it “Coronation Street”,

This must surely be the first time that the Coronation Street theme tune has been mentioned on BaL: a wonderfully apt comparison!

But not accurate ? I don’t think the vibrato in the trumpet solo of Lancashire Blues is like that of the first horn in the LPO . It’s more of a crooning jazz feel than the Russian’s clogs on the cobbles Black Dyke sun setting over the pit shaft atmos.? (If we are dealing in cliches)

Struggling to get back on topic, this BaL is actually managing to rekindle my interest in the work, though I doubt it will lead to a new purchase. That said, I am currently importing the Jurowski (with the 4th) from QOBUZ.

True enough; still made me sit up and listen, though (today's BaL very much in the background for me!).

                          That's true too for me.

Jansons and Oso do it for me. Even if it doesn't come out on top, it ticks my boxes and I don't need to buy another, though I may stream out of curiosity.

We’ve not really had the French/Russian horn sound that I sometimes crave with Tchaik 5, possibly a little with Mravinsky!

So, Jansons it is. I still recall my delight at finding the symphonies set at a bargain price in the sadly missed Steve's Sounds.
