In general I find Tchaikovsky's concept of orchestral sound a bit stereotyped and unimaginative, but I always made an exception for his 4th and 6th symphonies, and (Tchaikovsky admirers will scoff at this no doubt) I first appreciated the 5th in Celibidache's recording, which somehow sounds like Tchaikovsky through the prism of Bruckner, even though the notes are all the same as in other performances, and as a result of this every other recording of the 5th seems wrong to me. I know it's actually me that's wrong, but there it is.

Are you referring to the old LPO Decca recording?

Is that the 1983 one, to be found on Youtube?

The Warner CD is hard to find as a download, and rather pricey in CD format.

You don’t fancy the 49 CD Munich Years set for £56 then Bryn?

... I would be tempted - but I think too many duplications for me -

I'm tempted too, I have all the Bruckner and the Tchaikovsky 5 and I think that's all. Of the rest there's quite a lot that would be of interest, but not the Schumann or anything earlier than that.

Trouble is, I already have the Bruckner from that set, which puts the pro-rata price up from £1.16 per disc to £1.53.

Ah well, I guess I will have to find a home for the Bruckner box. Unfortunately, I know too few people who would appreciate it.

Look for the old Monitor documentary on You Tube and watch him conducting the RNCM orchestra in the finale of Tchaikovsky 4 - playing out of their skins .His Francesca da Rimini is the only one to mention in the same breath as Stoky IMO.

As I prefer nos 4 and 6 this is not a major issue for me but it will put off many people from buying these outstanding performances.
I think that was identified as a problem when David Fanning presented the last BaL on Tchaik 5 back in April 07 - but he went ahead and made it his first choice anyway.

I bought the Petrenko and RLPO set of the six numbered symphonies and have had immense pleasure in being persuaded how unjustly neglected 1 and 3 are. Great involving performances superbly recorded with no wobbly horn in 5.

I'm pretty happy with all of the 1 version I have - Philadelphia/Ormandy on Sony Essential Classics. which I think cost me £1 in a local charity shop.
I used to have the LSO/Markevitch 'twofer' but I got tired of having to plod over to the CD player to change the disc half way through.

Aaah, now we’re talking...the volcanic Matacic on Supraphon in excellent 1960 stereo sound and the wonderfully driven Jurowski LPO. Both in with a good shout, I reckon. But I have been wrong before (2nd May 1973, if I remember correctly).
