I've just listened to some examples of the Sofronitsky - one thing that stands out is the sheer beauty of the recorded sound.

Yes a wonderful work . Also a work that perhaps pushed forward musical expression with its tonally ambiguous opening. Though HC Robbins Landon thinks Mozart might be ‘remembering ’ a very similar C minor statement from an earlier Haydn Symphony (No.78) or so I was reading coincidentally in his book Mozart’s Golden Years last night!. HCL points out the concerto has conquered the world whereas the symphony is largely forgotten.

Forgotten? Not by me, or any true Haydnseeker who has this terrific release.....

78 is yet another of those marvellous Haydn introuvables....

Yes, a lovely release, which brought about a happy final filling in of the gaps to my HIP Haydn symphony collection.

Yes, it's really good, clear and still resonant, the ensemble playing colourful and the soloist both expressive and precise - all one could want in fact. The only annoying thing is that on Qobuz it's only available as separate albums, as fas as I can see, and there are no liner notes. Never mind though, I think it's a set to get to know better. (I'm not sure I could take all 27 on a "modern" piano!)

I relented and bought the Sofronitsky (do I really need a third HIP Mozart piano concerto cycle?!). At £22 odd it seemed like an excellent bargain. Thanks to Vints for flagging it up.

No nor by me . I think HC RL had a bee in his bonnet about Haydn’s relatively lower profile - I think things have changed since the book w@S published but I can’t remember the last time I heard this one on R3 ..

I bought it a couple of years ago, encouraged by Bryn's espousal and, I have to admit, the low price (in France). It's the Mozart PC cycle which I listen to most often when I'm in France (where, unlike me, alas, it's currently "confined"). Imaginative and enjoyable, with an infectious sense of spontaneity.

A while ago I remember thinking I would invest in a set of Mozart Concertos on fortepiano. I surveyed the scene, read reviews etc and could not decide, so resolved the dilemma by not buying one at all. I have one very enjoyable fortepiano CD which I got when it came out in 1992 - Tan/Norrington in K488/466. I shall content myself with listening to some others via online streaming.

.. my optimistic reading of this is - you have so much joy ahead of you as you find your way thro' the various wonderful early piano recordings of these works!

                        - Brautigam, Bilson, Levin, Schoonderwoerd, Sofronitsky, Van Immerseel, ...

                        .

Thanks for the nudge. Spoilt for choice. It's a nice dilemma.

Agreed Pet, although I too will be giving the BaL a miss as I always do nowadays.
Like most of Radio 3's output it's lost it's appeal for me

There's still much to be gained by listening, even though AMcG's unnecessary and distracting interruptions fail to grow on me, and others.
