    BaL 27.03.21 - Mozart: Piano Concerto no. 24 in C minor K.491

    9.30 Building a Library
Lucy Parham chooses her favourite recording of Mozart's Piano Concerto No 24 in C minor, K491.
Mozart composed his much-loved Piano Concerto in the winter of 1785-86, shortly before the premiere of the Marriage of Figaro. Despite the compositional proximity of the two works, they reveal very different sides to Mozart's compositional personality, the opera being bright and upbeat while the piano concerto is much darker and is one of only two minor key piano concertos in his entire output. The Piano Concerto in C minor is also different from the earlier concertos because it uses a much larger orchestra including oboes and clarinets. The premiere is thought to have taken place at Vienna's Burgtheater in April 1786. Beethoven is known to have greatly admired Mozart's Piano Concerto No 24 and exclaimed to his friend, Cramer, that he would never be able to do anything like that.

I lost track of all of my recordings of this piece, but my first was Casadesus/Szell, still one of the best

Phew! Sorry to find the Viviana Sofronitsky survey of the concertos seems to be no longer available new. While it would not necessarily be my library choice, I am very glad to have it available, however: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...mbhx6kcO2mS3zt.

Aha! Also available to download at CD rate from QOBUZ, and maybe other sites.

Such a shame that Robert Levin, the AAM and Hogwood never recorded this and completed their cycle.

So who is going to risk purchase from Germany and report back on the struggle?

When I bought the set in 2012, it cost me £27.29 including p&p. Downloading from QOBUZ today would cost nearly three times that.

The only time I saw Clifford Curzon was in this very concerto (LPO/Haitink Nov 6 1979) and a recording of that performance was issued on BBC Legends. As it's not included on Alpie's list is it nla?

The 24th is one of my favourite Mozart PC's with Brendel in one of his versions, all of which I have, being my usual port of call. Impossible to count all recordings I have, scattered around as they are in boxes and various couplings, and good luck to Ms Parham in coming up with a 'winner'.

How can you possibly resist the endless stream of melody and delicious wind writing in this gorgeous concerto?

Yes, my favourite Mozart PC. I first fell in love with Kempff's version (which I bought for the A major coupling) and it still take some beating.
