BaL 6.03.21 - Debussy: Études pour piano

My first recording of these was Yvonne Loriod on Erato - a technically exhausting performance for my taste on a very hard-toned piano. My last, Peter Frankl on the cheap Turnaround series (Vol 3), tends rather too much in the opposite direction for me, being all-too unassuming and lacking in punch. My vinyl copy has now worn out.

I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation from among currently available recordings?

Opinions would be most gratefully received.

I unhesitatingly recommend Uchida, who is masterly and wonderfully recorded.

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I think the Uchida is excellent in every respect, but if you're in the mood for a different type of interpretation, try the Paul Jacobs and Gilbert Kalish recording (Nonesuch). Critics have used the words "crystalline" and "intellectual" to describe him--which I suppose are as good as any--but this performance struck me as being full of passion and nuance as well, which to my mind makes for the best of all worlds. Technically brilliant, but full of luminous warmth and a real sense of individuality and character.

for me it's Jean-Yves Thibaudet or Alain Planès.

As with others, Uchida is astoundingly good in this music.

I would not go for Uchida in this music. I would far rather go with vinteuil and chose Thibaudet or Planes.

I have heard only Uchida which is very fine but I don't suppose she says all that can be said about the music. Rarely programmed, I don't think I've ever heard the studies performed live. Should be a fascinating BAL.

Is this a future BAL? When?

... and not forgetting Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, very well recorded and with a fine performance of the two sets of Images as a coupling

My mistake, not a forthcoming BAL.
