The brass in the Furtwangler- absolutely amazing! What a performance...

The Celi is my favourite of his Bruckner recordings. In fact it might be my favourite Bruckner 6. Although I find Nelsons and Venzago very valuable too. I'm bound to say it's a shame there's no Giulini though!

        Indeed it is Jochum.

So, the later (EMI/Warner) Juchum it is.

            Unlistenable.
You could at least wait till he's finished before shouting at us in bold type.

‘Bold and chaotic’ - a bit like Service.
              What is he on?

                Caffeine, I expect.
A Ventolin inhaler is what he needs.

I am listening 15 minutes behind on BBC Sounds but not surprised by the winner but I find those Jochum recordings, early digital rather glaring .

I rather enjoyed all the Klemperer excerpts .

I think he did a really good job in acknowledging different performance traditions , being open about what he favoured and why and coming to a well-argued conclusion. He also played several performances I had never heard before. I had no problem with his final choice but as I’ve said in another strand I do find the Dresden SK brass a bit coarse at times and not in an edge of precipice “out-there “ Furtwangler / BPO way...

A fairly long short list by contemporary standards.

Not a great fan of the orchestral playing on that Jochum cycle. A well argued choice nonetheless.

I have the 'winner' in a 1998 EMI Classics forte 2CD set (with S5 on the other CD); I seem to remember some comment (here or in another thread) about the sound in that incarnation being not that great.

There’s quite a bit of discussion of the Jochum complete set in this thread

                              Thanks.
It's reassuring to know that I hadn't imagined it.
