Kocsis ordered on basis of what we heard.

Piano sound doesn’t have much depth on the Hough recording (as reproduced in my bedroom).

Slightly strange that having raved about Kocsis, it didn’t get a mention at the end.

The virtuously in that recording is unbelievable though I don’t have a problem with the final “result” . Amazed the Van Cliburn with its ropey orchestra made it that far. Interesting that the one Argerich clip , for me , show cased what I don’t like about her playing even though she has a fabulous technique.
Did any one else think that Rachmaninov was peerless in the opening melody (the grade two bit ) ?
David Owen Norris didn’t mention that the concerto was dedicated to Hoffman who never played it. I don’t think his hands were big enough.

I think Argerich is fabulous in this concerto but I have rather overplayed her recording and am resting it ! I know they love their tiny shortlists on BAL nowadays do they can fit in all Andrew McGregor’s unnecessary interjections but surprised - Ashkenazy,Janis,Lazar Berman and Gilels in particular were ignored.

Yes agree about the opening played by the composer, seemed very much the real deal. I want to get that recording.

All Rachmaninov’s performances of his concertos are special. I think they are available still on Naxos.

I used to think Tom Service was too breathless, too garbled and way too excited to be a Radio 3 presenter but after hearing David Owen Norris, he pales in comparison! Must be on something!!

Is the Hough available on Qobuz? I just searched for it and couldn’t find it, although interestingly the Trifonov popped up when I searched so perhaps I will listen to that this afternoon

It's on Hyperion, so no. Hyperion does not offer its catalogue for streaming. The best deal is usually to download from their own site and buy enough at once to gain greater discounts.

The only recording I have. I’ve got so used to the sound that I’ve never felt the need to buy a more modern version. But perhaps I should.

TBH I didn’t really hear anything that would incline me to buy anything else. Wang sounded her usual technician self and Trifonov somewhat wilful.

You’ve very acutely summed them up - two more amazing technicians but just the way Rachmaninov shapes the opening melody...what a musician.
In contrast , not played , the Weissenberg/ Bernstein opening weirdly accented and total disagreement on the tempo!
