I hadn’t played the Columbia /Walter for a while - it never pales- just marvellous.

The first does seem to be the Mahler symphony to which Walter was most sympathetic. Apart from his earlier New York recording there's also a fascinating Testament remastering of a 1947 Albert Hall performance with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, part of a series of BBC Third Programme broadcasts of the nine completed symphonies.

I think there are even more Walter live M1 recordings issued from concerts in the 1940s-50s out there. The earlier New York one that you referenced is included in the big Walter box and is a nice supplement to the stereo one

I think remakes of the Mahler 4 and possibly 5 were planned at the time of Walter's death. I have probably mentioned it somewhere before but I love the story , possibly apocryphal , that Lenny was most annoyed when told that the release of his Mahler 1 with the NYPO was to be delayed due to the Walter - then he listened to it and agreed .
