If forumists wish to discuss recordings of Mahler’s 6th Symphony, it would be better to discuss it here:

Erm me neither but some are a lot better than others ! Listened through my recordings last week or so - Abbado,Barbirolli (two versions ) , Lenny -Sony and DG, Kubelik - DG- and Walter (. 2 versions .

All at the least very good but the Columbia SO/Walter still shades It for me.

Prompted by this thread, I've bought the Kubelik and I like it very much. The recording obviously isn't recent but it's more than adequate. Interested to see whether Gillian Moore comes up with as good a performance in a recent recording.

Totally agree about Kubelik. If I want the angst of Siegmund Freud's Vienna I'll turn to Bernstein; but if I want to experience the woods and fields of Mahler's native Bohemia then give me Kubelik every time.

Is that the DG (from the survey) or the Audite Kubelik?

That's why I have to have more than one recording of some works. To have different listening experiences.... similar to seeing different productions of the same play.

Just arrived and now spinning in 2 channel DSD mode, the Bruno Walter piano 4-hands arrangement. The recording was made in MDGs proprietary 2+2+2 3 dimensional sound format but I have not yet got around to setting up the speaker distribution (lower left and right front, upper left and right front, and mid-height left and right rear).

Of course, you only get to know the surround sound layer is in 2+2+2 format when you open the booklet, note the on-screen information reads "Channels: 6", rather than "5.0" or notice that if your speakers are set up for 5.0, it just does not sound right. The outer packaging merely carries the usual SACD logo and legend. Still, that's a minor moan. I rather like the concept of 2+2+2.

That's the DG studio recording from the Collectors Edition box. (I've also got the latest incarnation of the symphonies, bought just for the original artwork, I'm ashamed to say.) I haven't heard the live recording on Audite. But anyone tells me with conviction that it is as least as good as the studio recording, then buy it I shall.

                      Generally held to be superior.

Does that extend to all his live Munich Mahler recordings? I've only heard Das Lied from the Audite series. Think carefully before you answer; this could cost me a lot of money!

I only have experience of the 1st and 8th from the Audite series. In both instnces, I prefer them to the studio edits, though the recording quality is not up to the DG studio standard. In the case of the 8th, you get two different mixes. I think others here may be able to offer opinions on some of the other symphonies.

Not long to wait, now. Looking forward to the running commentary on here.

Short list a bit brutal. Three categories?

                                250 versions in all?
