BaL 12.12.20 - Franck: Three Organ Chorales

    9.30 Building a Library
Anna Lapwood chooses her favourite recordings of Franck’s Three Organ Chorales

Cesar Franck composed his Three Organ Chorales in 1890, the year he died. They were clearly intended to be played on a French symphonic organ like the Cavaillé-Coll instrument at Sainte-Clotilde in Paris, where he was organist. Franck was a great musical architect and helped innovate the “cyclic style”. But he was also a great master of melody and harmony.

I don't know these works at all. Should be good - rubbish format, notwithstanding!

I already know the type of sound I would like; big, clear, top-quality sound engineering

A pity Olivier Latry hasn’t been mentioned here. What masterpieces these Chorales are.

On the contrary BBM, it’s a relief that he has, by Simon in #3. IIRC, that series of Latry playing the incomparable organ of NDdP was released in SACD format by DG, sadly abandoned by Universal. A good opportunity to listen to Cochereau’s instrument while it is being repaired after the fire.

When as many suitable 8ft stops as possible are combined on the Truro Father Willis and Chorale No.1 starts to glow in the ample acoustic, one is listening in at the gates of organ heaven.

No criticism of Alpie intended, but I wonder how this list was compiled.
There seemed surprisingly few recordings, and a quick search on Presto (for Choral 1) showed some more complete sets (there may well be many individual discs with one or other of them on), including (just from the first page that appeared)
Ben Van Oosten (already mentioned): https://www.prestomusic.com/classica...he-organ-works

Thank you. What I would give to hear them on the St-Sulpice Cavaillé-Coll!

Yes, indeed! I bought in FNAC Bastille (that store closed now, I think) some years ago!
