Brilliant early call - any thoughts on the 4.30 Race at Kempton ?

I can’t claim much credit - it was pretty obvious pretty quickly.

FHG would have hated the blanket dismissal of HvK.

          My thoughts exactly.

I see the choices were HIPP or HIPP.

Thing is I like long legato violin lines and I like the string section of the BPO who desk for desk knock most HIPP bands into a cocked hat....but I agree about the lost woodwind and the lumpy chorus.

Is that in Karajan or Abbado?

That’s my summary of Simon’s dismissal of The 81:Karajan which I partially agree with.

I did not get to bed until around 03:00, so drifted off quite early in the survey. Was much made of the editions used and their relative merits/demerits? Interesting to see that CH pipped JEG, this time.

Didn’t hear much edition talk but I was only half listening...

A quick check of the booklet pdf confirms that Suzuki used the Beyer completion. Hogwood used the Maunder. Both editions take a minimalist approach to the fillings out. As far as I can see, only the rejected Rilling used the more interventionist Levin edition.

The issue of editions is dealt with, to some extent, from around 09:56.

I’ll be getting the Suzuki. One of very few Mozart works I like.

I am going to have to seach my old hard drives and DVD-Rs for the 2006 Proms performance of Levin's completion (Voices, OAE, Mackerras):

Slightly odd BaL; however, I did like the (short) extract from the Sony recording with, I think the BRSO... with those timps and trumpets! As to the "winner" I would need to hear more. From the too few and too short extracts, I thought they sounded a little too safe - too perfect, even. The reviewer seemed to roundly discount Karajan from the off, but later on expressed that he was re-warming to it. Nothing wrong with that. Reviewers are human too!

It was the Hofkapelle Stuttgart, not the BRSO.
