Sampled it on QOBUZ this afternoon. Very much a mon goût.

On my 1984 recording of the Talich quartet, the "viol-like" sounds come out as a fast fluttering, rather than vibrato free. Does the score say anything about this?

Looks like this might be a performance with score.

There is a performance of the Ravel Quartet on TTN tonight, by the Terpsycordes Quartet, on historic instruments.

Thanks for the prompt. I have liked the performances I have heard them give, to date.

Happily (for me ) it's the first item on the programme, at 0030.

              Thanks, Beresford!

The "viol-like" section is marked ppp - Tremolo, so I guess flutter is more accurate, but it works well played as a viol chord.

I thought that... UNTIL I heard the Ébène Quartet when their recording came out and I was recommended to listen to it. I have to say it still sounds in a different league, pretty much perfect to my ears (with the gorgeous Fauré as a huge bonus).

Jeremy Sams was good, I thought, and I learnt things about a piece I thought I knew well... plus some interesting other performances which were new to me. Going to investigate the Stenhammar and Van Kuijk quartets.
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                  Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Nice to hear from you again - hope things aren't too grim in the capital!

Thanks, can’t complain about my bit of it. Cycling in the Park remains a joy. Oddly empty everywhere, like Christmas morning (unless apparently you make the mistake of going to Tesco etc at 6am for opening time )

We met up with our daughter, son and daughter-in-law in London 2 months ago to celebrate our (London) Golden Wedding. We got married in January so as to avoid paying 2 lots of rent - thank Heavens we didn't wait until to Spring!
