I thought that... UNTIL I heard the Ébène Quartet when their recording came out and I was recommended to listen to it. I have to say it still sounds in a different league, pretty much perfect to my ears (with the gorgeous Fauré as a huge bonus).
Jeremy Sams was good, I thought, and I learnt things about a piece I thought I knew well... plus some interesting other performances which were new to me. Going to investigate the Stenhammar and Van Kuijk quartets."...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
