Was pleased that the Dante Quartet opened the programme and was expecting further mention later! But they just disappeared without comment I have their recording, and indeed most of the Dante's discography. For other versions of the Ravel, just the Italiano plus the old Parrenin on LP.

The Dantes were almost my local band with their summer festival in this region. Sadly, they disbanded last year though the Dante Festival will continue under Krysia Osostowicz, their leader. The quartet also may reform in the Midlands under (over?) cellist Richard Jenkinson.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I didn't get around to following the score with any of my recordings prior to this morning, but had it to hand during the programme.
A fair bit was said about the dynamic range, but in some of the extracts I didn't find it that noticeable: in the first movement, for example, the marking goes from ppp at letter F in the Dover edition to fff at letter H.
It was also the first time that I had spotted that Ravel gives both 6/8 and 3/4 (the latter in brackets) as the time signature for the second movement, with accents for Violin 2 and Viola in the first two bars on quavers marked bold here: 123456123456.
Not sure I noticed that either, but I may do some more concentrated (headphone) listening later.

Funnily enough,LMP, wanted to ask you about that festival, which I once attended, but couldn't remember the name. All things considered, do you think it will happen this year? Under the old name?

Definitely happening, kernel, from 8 to 12 July, though content is still to be settled AFAIK. See PM to follow.

The continued paucity of information re next week's BaL is puzzling indeed.

Well I did listen, and Jeremy S wasn't too diverted by Andrew. I just love the Ravel. I don't often rush to order a CD after BAL. but in this case I'm ordering not the winner but the Quatuor Van Kuijk version. There is a decision to be made as to whether or not you want a dreamy and slightly smoochy first movement...but I've got plenty of those, so maybe a young group will bring a new perspective.

[Not the first movement, and maybe not even from their CD.]

Little did I know what a bargain I was getting when I spotted the Ebene in our local library's DVD and CD clearance sale for £1!

It seems as if the Dante wound up in Purgatorio...

I enjoyed Jeremy Sams structural approach to Ravel's String Quartet. I thought his host was a tad naughty to introduce the concept of "orchestration" , a concept clearly stolen from what his guest was about to say. The idea that Ravel had difficulty with finales was new to me, but I soon thought, "How true.".

I would buy the Quatuor Van Kuijk simply for those wonderful 'viol-like' moments in the slow movement. Absolutely exquisite.
