No particular argument with his conclusion though, from the extracts played

I found his critical vocabulary a little limited and repetitive - surprising given that he’s well educated, and given his day job. But the conclusion was indeed sound enough.

Well, well, Micky. I've found Neeme's Prelude on Youtube and whilst it's technically very secure, it's also safe, and full of pastel colours whereas Nev is replete with vivid oils. Two saving graces: some lovely quiet bars and the grandest coda of 'em all!

Thanks for your thoughts...will give it a spin tonight. If I remember correctly, I think I acquired it because it conveniently gathers much of the rest of the string music together on one disc.

It's listed as download only in Alpie's list, but does seem to be available £5.99 Amazon UK in a Virgin Classics Grieg/Nielsen collection. As astonishing a BAL omission as the Bergen PO/Ruud version.More homework !

Did I miss something here? This repeat seems to have given very little information about the piece - but perhaps I wasn't listening hard enough. It was originally written for piano, so wouldn't it have been good to start with a version like that?

Waffle is a feature of ad hoc chats. I didn't think 'weedy' was a very apt word he used (twice) for violins in a chamber-sized performance. Why not just say he preferred a big string orchestra version?
