The BBC MM review of the Rattle recording in the latest issue confirms that it does contain a full libretto in Czech with English translation. On this basis, and on the strength of the review, I'd be happy to purchase.

Has anyone here actually got the SACDs? If so, can they confirm or deny the accuracy of the Gramophone and BBC MM claims that the libretto is included. The LSO live site only mentions a booklet (not booklets). The pdf of the booklet available via QOBUZ neither has the libretto nor any mention of its availability as a separate document.

Yes, libretto is included with the CDs, in a 106 page booklet.

                **SPOILER ALERT**

Nigel Simeone, writing in the November issue of Opera, has already indicated his preferred version.

I did indeed write about the new Rattle recording in Opera, but I really do hope people will make up their own minds after hearing the extracts we're using tomorrow.

Incidentally, we took the decision not to discuss DVD versions –so it'll just be the CDs/downloads that are considered.

Hmm. The programme is called Record Review these days, not CD Review. To me, a DVD is a record, as in a record of an event. Still, thanks for the advance warning of the limitation.

Not for want of trying, Bryn –but by limiting it to CDs at least we were able to discuss pretty much all of them in the time available.

For information, as well as Rattle's new LSO recording, two others should be added to the list of available (audio) versions, both of them obtainable as Supraphon downloads: Neumann's second (1979-80) set and Bohumil Gregor's (1970) and all three will be mentioned tomorrow. Re language, Gilbert is in English as well as Rattle (though they use different translations).

Of the DVDs (which aren't going to be considered in the BAL), Nagano's is severely cut to fit the hour-long format for which it was made.

A pretty impeccable BaL, albeit with a fairly predictable conclusion, by our very own Makropulos!

                                Agreed.

I didn't think I would be, but now I'm certainly tempted to add the Rattle to the Mackerras, that I already have, simply because it's such a wonderful work.
