BaL 31.10.20 - Janáček: The Cunning Little Vixen

    9.30
    Building a Library
Nigel Simeone chooses his favourite recording of Janacek's opera The Cunning Little Vixen

Composed in the early 1920s, The Cunning Little Vixen was based on a comic-strip novella serialised in Janacek's local newspaper. He poured all of his 70 years of life experience, and also the unreturned love for the much younger, married Kamila Stösslová into the piece. As well as the comedy it is also a melancholy reflection on the cycle of life and death.

Thought Alpie's list would be longer! I started in the 70s with the Supraphon LP set cond. Gregor and added the Mackerras set on CD and the Ozawa on BluRay (not terribly impressed with the visuals of the latter: I've seen much better touring productions live in this country).
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I studied Janacek operas at university. Still not all that keen on them. May need another look.

I'm devoted to the animated film of Vixen conducted by Kent Nagano.

Is this animated DVD performance identical to the “live” one?

Don't know the 'live' one, but it's the same cast, orchestra. The wonderful animation is by Geoff Dunbar.

I think it’s a shame that David Pountney’s magical (and much travelled) WNO production has never been committed to film. As it’s still in WNO’s repertoire, perhaps they could all oblige us by doing so next time it is revived.
"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

That's the one I was particularly thinking of, and was surprised not to find it on Amazon.

The Rattle is in English, yes?
                  All the others in Czech?

This early Covid-19 'victim' BaL has returned at last.

This is my favourite among Janáček's operas I think, mainly because it's less wordy than the others. I've seen no reason to branch out from just having the Mackerras recording, but I'll take Nigel's word for it if he disagrees!

There is also the recently released LSO/Rattle account on the LSO label from semi-staged performances in 2019 which I attended.
