A piece I have always loved since hearing it sung by my grandfather’s choir in the 1980s Fremaux for me.

... it's available in this useful and cheap five-CD set :

which is probably a better investment than getting the single CD :

        Very much so!

I’m always saddened that Poulenc never composed the other sections of the mass to complete this. What a work that would’ve been. Not usually what Poulenc would’ve done though, I think, unfortunately.

He did write a Mass, though (his unaccompanied Mass in G); one on the scale of the Gloria would have been pretty substantial!

We do have the gorgeous Stabat Mater (very close to my heart, this one), and the searching Sept Répons des Ténèbres.......both masterpieces, surely....
Try them all as a sequence....

The Mass in G and Sept Chansons are on the forthcoming BBC Music Magazine CD on sale from February 20.

The BBC Singers are conducted by Sofi Jeannin.

Well, the wonderful and inspiring sounds of the Gloria are underway, but initial impressions are that we are undergoing the worst kind of chummy, giggly twofer.

                  I hope I’m wrong.

Going well, so far. Not a work I have ever got past the opening fanfares of but this is lifting my interest.

Not at all bad for a twofer.
Really impressed with the Layton, so just ordered (regardless of who 'wins').

Sorry Alpie, I'm with Pulcinella on this one!
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Oh dear. I do like a review to have some analytical detail such as DON would bring to it. AMG was 'on the wrong page' a couple of times, e.g. starting to talk about soprano solos when there was still Mov't 2 to be played. EMT's contribution was hugely focused on soprano soloists...with frequent references to herself. One thing I would have liked to be mentioned was this:

Early versions of both orchestral and vocal scores were full of mistakes (not uncommon in French editions, sadly) making rehearsals difficult as I remember from personal experience.

I'm glad Richard Hickox got a good airing, even if he didn't 'win'. Layton+Polyphony+Trinity+London Sinfonia are fairly unbeatable if you want a sparkling modern hi-tech recording. However Poulenc's comments on 'The English Choral Sound' are well-known I think.

No problem. It started off sounding like Katie Derham and Sean Rafferty, but at least there was some substance among the jabber.

Yes, I agree, thought that was the outstanding excerpt from ones that I hadn’t heard previously.

The unaccompanied motets, also on the cd, sung by Polyphony an added incentive. Looks as though Hyperion has garnered extra sales according to these posts even though they didn’t win.
