Thanks for this, Lordie - I'm an intermittent fan of Currentzis, but this one had passed under my radar before this Thread. I shall give it a listen later on

I have but I’m afraid I am never much of a fun of Simone Kermes who tends to be, so it sounds to me, rather over-dramatic. Her Dido is to me too much lament and not enough passion or fury. Catherine Bott for me forever

          Quite.

It was Susan Graham and Emmanuelle Haim’s other performers who impressed me most in a work which, for some reason, has always left me cold (ditto Purcell operatic works generally )
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
          Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

I am a Sarah Connolly fan but note that Tim Ashley in the Guardian was not convinced: "Her Dido sounds neither "prest with torment" in the opening scenes nor anguished at the close." I'm curious to see if I agree when I get to listen.
I wouldn’t bother myself about agreeing with Ashley. I am not convinced that he attends all the performances that he reviews. If he does, he sometimes forgets to listen.

I rather like the recording I have, Richard Hickox.

Kermes is still my favourite in the lament - beautifully understated and lovely strings.
