And it’s an often voiced opinion that the reviewer has overlooked or deliberately gone against the critical consensus.

Compare Jeremy Summerly last week. Now, I don’t completely buy his line that he listens to all the recordings ‘blind’ and has no clue who the performers are. But he gave a far more convincing impression of someone who had listened and thought for himself, and reached his own conclusions based on nothing but the recordings and a close examination of the score.
I didn’t get that this morning, at all.
Caroline Gill was far more convincing, in substance, later in the morning. For me, anyway.
So the references to deviations from Haydn's markings were just guesswork, eh? Perhaps you simply differed in your opinion of the assessments made and are looking for a way to dismiss those you disagreed with. I am not at all convinced by your arguments.

One thing I need to listen again to the opening remarks of this BaL for is what at first hearing seemed to leave open to question who had compiled the shortlist of recordings to be considered.

Note that I said ‘a close examination’. A fairly superficial read-along could have produced those references.
Didn’t disagree with the result. Just unconvinced by the methodology.

Not an opinion you’ll hear voiced by me. The important thing for me is that the decision is cogently justified. If then it differs from the ‘consensus’ it is more likely to make me try the recording for myself.

It did leave it open to question. Which troubled me, and may even have put me in a bad mood.

Borderline off topic, but someone referred to Caroline Gill’s capable reviewing above. She had a brief but excellent stay on the Gramophone panel. Does anyone know why it was brief?

I don’t know why - only that it should not have been curtailed.

I have now listened again. AMcG attributed the reduction to the shortlist to Doc Walker herself, but it was only a passing comment. I have more time for both of Norrington's recordings the she did but accept her rational for excluding them from final consideration. The omission of any mention of Fey, though, was something of a surprise.

I wasn't giving full attention, but I thought that the Colin Davis recording was recommended (albeit not overall first choice); or am I getting my Concertgebouw recordings mixed up?
Alpie hasn't 'oranged' it in the list (nor is it mentioned on the website).

Quite so, they have put up the wrong RCO recording (Harnoncourt) on the site.

                          Ah! Ho hum...

Silly me, thinking the BBC was still a competent organisation. I shall amend. I was surprised, as I thought the Harnoncourt extracts were rather ponderous.

But the yellow colour you've chosen is terribly hard to read (at least on my iPad screen).

Can't face the Colin Davis yet again, let alone Marriner...(never a fan of the latter I'm afraid, and been there done that double da capo da capo...)...
Will listen to this BaL later.... did Sigi K not get an honourable mention at least?

Downloaded (and how quaint all that procedure now seemed after so long...).. the Hyperion Helios (£6.50) of the very promising sounding Goodman, which I've not heard before... listen & comment soon, but there's a big match on so...back in the long dark evening...

Seems you can also order the CD from here for £6.50 as well...

If anyone wants the CD, there are some reasonable Helios offers here....

Or off of the Hyperion site itself, as above.
