Have to say I enjoyed this edition of BAL, Sarah Walker carefully weighing up the various approaches and summarising in the manner of a proper library builder.
Always inclined to headline the positives, I enjoyed the ‘permission’ to enjoy the unfashionable Marriner and Solti with Hickox another surprise inclusion.
No argument with the winner, shame about the second movement cock up. Timpani at the end my sort of thing.

A very bank-balance friendly edition for me. I started collecting the Goodman Haydn Symphony recordings long ago, some in the original Hyperion full price guise, though most in their bargain Helios re-issue versions. I think now I have all of them he recorded. The Davis is a long-standing classic recording with modern instruments. I got the impression that AMcG's interventions might possibly have been, if not scripted by Doc Walker, at least seeded by her in advance. Re. Haydn and the offer of grace and favour accommodation at Windsor Castle, his Windsor Castle Overture is to be found on the very CD chosen.
