...and they can’t even play the right movement.

Maybe it’s just me, but everything Harnoncourt touches seems to turn to sludge.

Two R3 presenters overestimating their own importance perhaps?

'"There are many other recordings which I've not had time to include."
          (I paraphrase; maybe not verbatim!)

The answer to that is self-evident (to this self, anyway!).

Goodman is an excellent Haydn conductor, but those closing bars sounded a bit too much like a timp solo to me!

Was really hoping to hear a sample of Fey to see what's lighting the fire of JLW amongst others

Might snap up the Goodman if I see a cheap copy but will remain pretty content with Harnoncourt and Davis
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Have to say I enjoyed this edition of BAL, Sarah Walker carefully weighing up the various approaches and summarising in the manner of a proper library builder.

Always inclined to headline the positives, I enjoyed the ‘permission’ to enjoy the unfashionable Marriner and Solti with Hickox another surprise inclusion.

No argument with the winner, shame about the second movement cock up. Timpani at the end my sort of thing.

I wonder if there's any benefit to the listener with these things being broadcast live? The cock-up with the second Goodman extract could easily have been edited out and replaced if this had been recorded.

I agree and feel that Goon's suggestion of prerecording/ editing these discussions would be a boon.

This would also avoid the excuse for twoferisation.

I simply wish they'd do their socialising outside office hours

On the other hand the live show has made possible a touching tribute to Sir Stephen.

A very bank-balance friendly edition for me. I started collecting the Goodman Haydn Symphony recordings long ago, some in the original Hyperion full price guise, though most in their bargain Helios re-issue versions. I think now I have all of them he recorded. The Davis is a long-standing classic recording with modern instruments. I got the impression that AMcG's interventions might possibly have been, if not scripted by Doc Walker, at least seeded by her in advance. Re. Haydn and the offer of grace and favour accommodation at Windsor Castle, his Windsor Castle Overture is to be found on the very CD chosen.
