    BaL 23.11.19 - Haydn: Symphony no. 102

    09.30
Building a Library: Sarah Walker joins Andrew in the studio to discuss and recommend a recording of Haydn's Symphony No 102.
The tenth of Haydn's so-called 'London' symphonies, it was specially commissioned for performance in the city. In the hands of an insightful interpreter, it can be in turns joyous, incisive, and moving - Sarah guides us to the ultimate must-have version.

... surely you're going to promote Fey and the Heidelbergers too?

After the recent Bach, I wonder whether any non HIPP performances will get a look in? It will be a shame to miss out on Beecham et al as well as more recent offerings such as the Davis/Concertgebouw.

One of my favs definitely won't! I just love Leonard Bernstein's Haydn - pure exuberance.

I really enjoyed Minkowski's set of the London symphonies.

This is my favourite Haydn symphony, a joy from beginning to end, and Concertgebouw/Davis is my favourite recording of it.

              CBSO/Rattle comes a close second.

For me: Beecham, Dorati, Davis, Minkowski … open to others!

I only promote the cause of those I've heard; I never yet heard this one as I've tended to concentrate on Sturm und Drang Symphonies in recent years (where Fey and latterly, Spillner, have excelled)....but if I did hear it... probably!

I'll try to seek it out soon....

Just Dorati, Davis and Harnoncourt here. May be open to convincing BaL recommendations. Or possibly convincing non-recommendations
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

I've been comparing and contrasting two much admired recordings - trad Concertgebouw/Davis and HIPP Minkowski - and discover that it's in the following symphony 103, the Drumroll, that the contrast is so striking, right from the first bar.

What a pleasure this week is turning into.
