Well I learned things from this and enjoyed the broadcast. The trouble with the twofer format is the artificiality: nonetheless I thought Mark brought a spontaneity to his remarks.

I'd missed this one and learned a lot too. Glad that my Cafe Zimmermann did well but can't totally exclude the possibility of adding the Podger!

The only reason for not doing this is because of the BBC's bloody-minded reaction against our views about twofers.

I often think that, though I doubt whether the BBC cares one jot about what listeners actually think - only about what they think listeners should think.

I also have that as part of the excellent 6CD Bach set. I had also noted that the name of the soloist for the Concerto is not immediately apparent in the booklet notes. The Classics Today reviewer identified the soloist as David Plantier, but as mentioned in the review it must be the ensemble's director, Pablo Valetti.

Except it's not available on BBC Sounds and has not been for nearly 4 months (apart from its live availability between 9.30 and 10.15 this morning. Presumably, it will return for 30 days in an hour or so.

All of the BaL podcasts since 2015 are available via the BBC Sounds app. Also most of the podcasts since 2010 can be accessed by clicking on the clip low down on the CD Review page for the relevant BaL.

Are the podcasts not slimmed-down versions of the broadcasts? I was referring to the full versions as found within CD Review programmes. The podcasts are also only available at a highest data rate of 128kbps, as against 320kbps for the full BaLs within CD Review (for 30 days following broadcast).

Interestingly, in response to an enquiry on twitter yesterday Andrew McGregor said they were “ commissioned “ to make BAL in the twofer format as if they had no choice .

He also suggested they would not be able to do solos anyway - which for the reasons ardcarp gives I am rather sceptical about .

Listened to this one predictable outcome.

However, while having really good audio quality is generally to be applauded, does it make so much difference in a review programme like this? The tempi should be about the same - give or take a few microseconds, though the dynamics could be altered - perhaps significantly. What about orchestral (or other) balance - and tone?

I started writing this thinking that for the purposes of review there would not be such a big problem - but now I'm not so sure.
