... obviously, you should get all three.

However if you can only afford £3-84 (plus p&p), and if having all the repeats is essential, then Rousset's your man.

I would join others in commending Céline Frisch. This is the version I know from Qobuz - again, unusual cover art. Samples here: http://www.prestoclassical.co.uk/r/Alpha/ALPHA303

Also, Pierre Hantai, which can be auditioned here:

Thanks, Tony, for a fascinating post. Please report back if you find that book on CPE Bach!

Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.

... belatedly, I realise that these might be different recordings. My reference is to his first one [1992]. The second recording dates from 2003.

I am not sure whether Throppler's recommendation is the 1992 or 2003 ; I suspect the former.

Of course you should get both.

Curious how some of the editions have the Titian portrait the wrong way round -

and some the right way round -

That must be one of the more bizarre album covers. I may be missing something, but what does a sprouting potato have to do with Bach's Goldbergs?

Perhaps you missed the name of the company who issued the disc. They are infamous for the lack of connection between their cover illustrations and the music on the associated disc.

Back to Rousset. His recording is also to be found in the L'Oiseau-Lyre Florilegium Series Baroque Era box. Very low pro-rata price.

To add further clarity to vinteuil's clarification of the Hantai releases:

                        1) 1993 Opus 111/Naive

                          Thanks.
I hadn't realised that the Opus111 and Naive issues were one and the same.
I'm glad I've got the original Opus111 release/cover rather than the Spudulike Naive one.

No doubt I'm biased because I had some lessons with him... but if you temporarily put 'HIPP' out of the frame, you just have to admire his audacious use of every single gadget and tweak that is available on the huge Robert Goble 'revivalist' harpsichord with its 8 pedals, with their 'half-hitch' and their potential for 'crescendo' and 'diminuendo' effects. The awesome end result, although not 'authentic', is above all MUSICAL, and no less authentic than playing the Goldbergs on a modern piano.
I too knew George, and like NK. used to turn pages for him at concerts and recordings. I dont believe he was that happy with his Goldbergs and always wished he could have another crack at it. He wasn't comfortable in the studio and much preferred performing live. I haven't listened to his version for years but will certainly dig it out again now. Its the centenary of his birth next year and i do hope the BBC will do some sort of tribute - NK would be the ideal presenter. A number of events are currently being planned.
