I really love the later Gould recording that many critics dismiss as too self-indulgent.

Even though JSB generally preferred the clavichord, the variations were composed for a harpsichord player, so if you want to be HIPPer, this is the way to go.
I must say I was intrigued by the idea of recordings on the accordion.

I am addicted to this piece which I often listen to (Hewitt) when I have insomnia - I believe it was written partly for this reason!

A friend who owns the Catrin Finch arrangement for harp played it to a retired harpist whose comment was that she didn't know how CF had done it.

              Did Kirkpatrick record it?
Yes, he did at least once, this Eloquence CD - 469 673 2 - is the one I have, it's from about 1959, DG original I think.

Anyone for the Joyce Hatto version!!??

Listening to the "classic" Landowska recording on harpsichord from 1945. Herd of elephants!

Still she was a pioneer of this great work on the instument.

I think it would be great for two cornets, Eb Tenor Horn, Euphonium and Eb Bass to play this work. As i said earlier, the Canadian Brass Quintet(orchestral brass
instruments),brass sounds good in this piece.

Who's going to be the first to suggest a Stokowski-style orchestration?

My favourite too - a Desert Island Disc in fact the one I would rush to keep if the sea threatened to wash them all away!

For those of you with the Egarr version [and possibly others I'm not aware of] what do you think of the ideas about tuning? There is much speculation in the literature about the twirly decoration on the frontispiece of the 48.

There's the question of repeats as well of course. Gould's 1959 live version took about 37 mins [!!] whereas most "full" versions are in the 70s. Longest I have is Tureck in 1978 at 83 mins. Hatto's [supposedly 1990] doesn't come close to any of the ones I have except perhaps Gould in his controversial 1981 version [55 mins] but then she could be edited!! It would seem that those fraudulent issues of hers were verbatim which is why they got found out.

                                Trevor Pinnock takes 60’45’’.

Catherine Bott said that Mahan Esfahani was playing the Kirkpatrick edition. And the harpsichord was apparently Trevor Pinock’s. It was a very good concert.
