Indeed, I was one of that 'many!' I don't feel so bad now, about getting rid of it, after reading the last couple of posts!

Thanks Bryn. I’ll buy that ASAP!

I was sucked into those at HMV Oxford Circus, big stacks of them and hugely reduced. Chunky old custard and red box it was too.

Yes. I gave my Medici Beethoven box (also from HMV, but Bond Street) to a friend. He has not spoken to me since.

                Time for a new thread?
'Recordings one regrets having bought' (or some such), with relevant posts from this thread moved to kickstart it?

Getting back to the Glagolitic, it strikes me as a work that has done proportionally well at the Proms over the years.

I must look up reviews of the Bergen/Ed Gardner as I imagine the recording quality would be excellent.

Note that Gardner uses the critical edition of the 1928 revision.

I would add that the programme note (available to read on the Chandos site) is by none other than the late, lamented John Tyrrell, and neatly sums up the issues of the works development and Janacek's decisions regarding its final revised score.

Rather enjoying this BaL. How it should be.

She's good. If only she hadn't been confined to a mere handful of recordings. She was obviously frustrated not to be allowed to play anything from the marvellous 1953 Bakala version - it sounded as if she'd been told not to, on grounds that the sound wasn't great.

With so few recordings being illustrated, there is no chance for listeners to make their own minds up, which used to be the point of BaL.
