Indeed. If weary, one can have a lie down with one ear against the pillow, in which case stereo would also come across as mono.

Prompted by discussion here I listened to Jochum's Sibelius recordings. I noticed a facsimile of the recording data. It mentions, tantalisingly, "Sibelius Op 51 Belshazzar's Feast". Has anybody ever come across this recording in any format?

An agreeable diversion while trying to get through on the 'phone to the Préfecture - here is, I think, your answer:

Cette discographie est à la fois beaucoup plus large et précise que celle de John Hunt. Elle discute, par exemple, de la véracité des enregistrements parus en Grande-Bretagne en 1994/95 dans la série Orchid.

La discographie de Rob Kruijt fait état d'un enregistrement DGG de la suite "Le festin de Balthazar" de Sibelius. Je n'ai, personnellement, jamais vu un disque DGG proposant cet enregistrement. John Hunt ignore cet enregistrement. René Trémine précise que cette page devait être enregistrée conjointement aux "Océanides", durant la session du 27 novembre 1955. Cet enregistrement eut-il lieu ? En tous cas, il n'a pas été publié, à ma connaissance.

La discographie de Jochum figurant dans le volume 2 de l'anthologie Tahra indique que la suite du Festin de Balthazar devait être enregistrée au cours de ces sessions, mais que ça ne s'est finalement pas fait.

Seuls Les Océanides, Chevauchée nocturne et les suites de La Tempête ont donc été enregistrées. A noter que le « cahier des charges » des sessions reproduit sous le plastique du CD digipack « Musik Sprache der Welt » (couplage avec du Wagner) mentionne lui aussi que la suite du Festin était prévue.

D’ailleurs, le son de l’enregistrement Jochum de la Chevauchée nocturne est meilleur (moins sec) dans la réédition The Originals (en complément de la 4e de Bruckner) que dans l’album « Musik Sprache der Welt » !!"

Merci M. des Hauts. "Festin" is rendered as "Gastmahl" on the recording notes, which sounds like a much more formal and dull affair. I remain tantalised, but resigned. It is a lovely suite. Jochum's Night Ride and Sunrise suggests it was a pity he did not record the subject of this entire thread, it would have been passionate.

I suspect the Préfecture is suffering from the heat.

I appear to have the inferior remastering (« Musik Sprache der Welt » ) but I hope the Eloquence version, which have ordered, will be superior. From the inlay I think that in the event only the overture to <<Der Sturm>> was recorded.

Still 30 degrees at 2240, and humid. Another sleepless night ahead.

I seem to have missed most of this but a recently acquired secondhand copy of the 1970s Ormandy on EMI strikes me as much the best I have heard - leaving even Gibson well behind .
