Finlandia is one of those works that I groan when I hear it announced on the radio but get sucked into the performance. We used to play it often in our local schools orchestra and it was the start of my love of the great Finnish composer's music.
That goes for me too, although I think I also first heard at least part of the Karelia Suite at around the same time.

I have not yet listened to it, but last night's TtN concluded with:

05:44 AM
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
Lemminkainen Suite: 4 Legends from the Kalevala for orchestra (Op 22)
Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Jukka-Pekka Saraste (conductor)

Andrew Mellor has just reviewed the new BBC SO/ Sakari Oramo in Gramophone, very positively. He says "Having just chosen my preferred recording of the suite for BBC Radio 3's BaL (Paavo Jarvi), there is no doubting this would have been a serious contender and at the very least an 'also recommended."

I wonder what the timescale is for preparing and publishing a Gramophone review compared to that given for preparing a BaL? This new (forthcoming at the time?) wasn't mentioned in the programme, was it?
All seems a bit odd to me, but then I'm pretty suspicious by nature.
Some people might call me cynical.

PS: If this is the July issue, mine hasn't arrived yet.

My electronic version has arrived, not the physical one yet.

I suspect the criterion for inclusion in BaL is that a recording has to be available at the moment of broadcast. The Oramo wasn’t, quite. It might have made sense to delay the BaL by a couple of weeks, but where would this end?

I don’t that is a criterion unless it has changed as I am sure forthcoming releases have been included in the past!

- companies used to send Reviewers advance copies of recordings about to be BaL-ed to the BBC.

"Is", now equals "was"; not bought by me, though, as I downloaded it from Chandos a couple of weeks ago. Really good recording quality (Watford Colosseum); fine orchestral playing - and a good coupling. As good as Paavo Järvi.

The new cd from Sakari Oramo and the BBC Symphony Orchestra popped through my door today. (A review copy - not to be re-sold!)

Anyway, very fine musicianship from all concerned. Absolutely beautiful solo playing especially Alison Teale in the wonderful Cor Anglais solo in the 'Swan of Tuonela'.

I'd recommend this disc to anyone interested in this wonderful music.

Thanks for the recco. Sibelius is a composer that does merit hearing multiple versions....

Was it sent to you for review, or has some naughty person flouted the rules, and profited unscroupuously?

I'm flattered you think Chandos would entrust me with reviewing one of their discs. No, it's the latter scenario. (Mind you, I sometimes come across Review Discs in charity shops in Edinburgh).
