Lined up on Qobuz ready for listening maybe tomorrow, thanks. (I'm a bit too taken up with RB-music today.)

When I started collecting in the seventies I think every available recording was coupled with the Grieg. Mine was Ogden/Bergland and for decades it was my only version and probably it was my introduction to the Pianist and the Conductor, in a work that we would not generally associate with either of them. My current favorite is Serkin/Ormandy. Serkin has a way of bringing great vitality and intensity to the Central European standards that can sound so standardized in other hands. And while I don’t mean to carp at recordings not included on the prodigious list, I think that there are several other Serkin versions, probably in mono, available—I just read a review of one from the thirties that was released on Pristine Audio

The list includes only versions generally available in the UK. (Though there are always missed versions - every week!)

Don’t suppose the reviewer will declare what she thinks of her own recording.

what? Surely the fact that Ms Parham has recorded it herself should disqualify her from being the reviewer?

I don’t see the problem, as long as she doesn’t consider her version.

... why so? If she admits that she too had recorded it, and doesn't single out her own recording for attention, what is wrong with her being a reviewer>

Yes indeed, but I am recommending an actual list, clearly set out and headed as suggestions for a BAL!

But that is itself an unprecedented limitation on a review. Supposing hers is a highly recommendable version, one that everybody who loves the work should own - she cannot, as a reviewer, make such a claim. It would be unfair on her - and listeners to the BaL - to remove the recording from a selection.

(And, if it's unrecommendable - what business has she criticising anyone else?! )

Ms Parham also recorded the Ravel Piano Concerto which as I recall it received a critical pasting.

I've just looked for a review of Parham's recording of the Schumann in Gramophone but can't find one.

It would have been interesting if way back Joyce Hatto had been reviewing a work she had ‘recorded’.

Awards/2004, Page 93, brief review as part of a reissue roundup.... Parham released a disc on Resonance including works by Clara and Robert Schumann, with the BBC Concert Orchestra and Barry Wordsworth...
