    .

... a special mention, I hope, for the recording (28/29 May 1930) with Eiko Kitazawa (soprano) and the Tokyo New Symphony Orchestra under Viscount Hidemaro Konoye (parlophone Japan), available in this must-have collection :

[ ... I see it cost me £25 in 2017 : the price seems to have gone up since... ]

Oh dear, I've just carried out an inventory and it seems that charity shops down the years have put far too much temptation my way

          Abbado (Von Stade)
          Abranavel
          Horenstein
          Klemperer (Schwarzkopf)
          Kletzki
          Kubelik
          Maazel (Battle)
          Rattle
          Reiner
          Szell
          Tennstedt (Popp)
          Welser-Most

Or there's always Otaka on a BBC MM CD.

So Nicholas Baragwanath shouldn't cry if he fails to sell me another one! But you never know...

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Can I just clarify, though - LMP does have a copy of the Szell doesn't he? (It's in his list - used to be at the end before the extra two were added).

So many excellent recordings of this work - I'll just add the Karajan/Mathis/BPO to everyone else's splendid choices. (And urge Alison to seek out the Szell at the earliest convenient opportunity: it's very good, and can only enhance the life of anyone who loves the work.)

Memory faded here: I must have had the LP when I was a student in Canada in the late 1970s, surely?
Just downloaded from the ether into my Sonos system to listen to later.

Only LPO/Lott/Welser-Möst and two BBC MM recordings on the shelves here.
But the BBC ones are BBCSSO/Valdine Anderson/Ion Marin (vol 9, no 8) and BBCSSO/Carolyn Sampson//Donald Runnicles (vol 25, no 8), not Otaka (who was Mahler 5).

Just confirming I do have the Szell. Not too sure where Bryn was coming from; wondered if it was some bad pun about the reviewer Szelling me another version

Sorry my reply to him was ambiguous Alison. You are still on your own and should immediately follow fhg's exhortation!

Oops sorry, bad lighting in that corner of the LMP library! I appear not to have kept either of the real BBC MM Mahler 4s

I bought the Szell as an LP in 1972, replaced by the CD around 20 years ago. Of listed singers, saw it with Margaret Price/LSO/Leinsdorf, also in 1972 (most recently with BBC NOW, Rebecca Evans )

It’s ordered, good steer! From memory I have

                                VPO/Abbado
                                BPO/Abbado
                                Cleveland/Boulez
                                Concertgebouw/Chailly
                                RPO/Gatti
                                LSO/Gergiev
                                Concertgebouw/Haitink x 4
                                BRSO/Haitink
                                BPO/Haitink
                                Mahler CO/Harding
                                VPO/Maazel
                                Philharmonia/Maazel
                                Philharmonia/Mackerras
                                Pittsburgh/Previn
                                BBCSSO/Runnicles
                                Chicago/Solti
                                LPO/Tennstedt
                                LPO/Welser-Most

Charity shop candidates are probably Boulez and Gergiev, though having said that I wouldn’t mind giving Pierre another try!

Favourites are VPO/Abbado, the most recent Concertgebouw /Haitink (Schafer), Mackerras, VPO/Maazel and Tennstedt.

Maybe George Szell will sweep the field!
