Agree; though Mrs A and I burst out laughing when Kubelik (who'd apparently ticked all NB's boxes) fell at the last hurdle. I would have liked more comparisons of the same extract in different hands...and of course less duplication of 'thoughts' by Andrew. I was left with a real wish to get hold of the Mengelberg.

I've tried quite a few transfers of this classic Mahler 4 and (as I keep saying...! ) this is by far the best:

Even if you want CD and have to wait for a burn, believe me it's worth it...
(The various Philips/Archipel/A.N.Other issues aren't terrible, but are either livelier & more detailed (more noise) or more muted & less detailed (less noise)... etc.)

Off of CD, I use the Archipel most on my mini-Tivoli, but on the big rig the balance of problems/advantages compared to the Pristine are obvious....

I wasn't as enamoured with the "winner" as the reviewer who chose it. I think he was almost forgeting to factor in the sheer enjoyment factor, and concentrating a little too much on what he thought Mahler 'would have wanted'
Fischer's recording did, to me, sound rather harsh - possibly cold. Of course, I realise my view is based solely on a few tiny examples.

Having now watched the Bernstein Youtube clip (the complete symphony 'live' with the Vienna Phil) I can't see anything about his speeds (e.g. the 'slow' movement) and interpretation* that yesterday's reviewer would have found fault with. And the soprano was the amazing Edith Mathis sounding fresh and youthful. I'm not sure Lenny recorded it with the Vienna Phil though. I'm not really a CD buff like many on here, but The New York Phil and The Amsterdam RCO seem to be the ones available with him.

*Of course Youtube's sound wasn't top notch.
