BaL 9.03.19 - Mozart: Clarinet Quintet in A

    09.30
Building a Library: Richard Wigmore discusses with Andrew recordings of Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet.
Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet, was written in 1789 for the clarinettist Anton Stadler. Like the Clarinet Concerto, also written for Stadler, it was actually written for the basset clarinet, which has an extended lower range, and so there are various decisions to be made about exactly what instrument you play it on. This is one of the great pieces of Mozart’s last years, full of a mellow yearning which suits the sound to the clarinet to perfection.

Formidable work yet again, Alpie - and yet again, thank you

One I shall enjoy listening to (I hope) for its own sake rather than (necessarily) with a view to spending money: one of my favourite works, and a work I will buy any version I don't have when I see them in charity shops.

Does an asterisk indicate 'stream/download only'?

I think so - but Alpie's the one to ask.

... yes indeed, many times over.

I have recently been enjoying the CD with Keith Puddy and the Gabrielii -

This is probably my favourite piece of Mozart and very high on my list of chamber music favourites. I have 3 versions: Boskovsky/ Vienna Octet (standard clarinet, Baermann-Oeler system), Peter Schmidl (modern basset clarinet, also Baermann-Oeler system)/ Vienna Octet, and Wolfgang Meyer (period basset clarinet)/ Quatuor Mosaiques. Unfortunately i will probably have to miss this BAL as I will be away next weekend, but I would be very interested to hear examples, both historic and period performances and the different schools of clarinet playing. Has anyone heard any of Eric Hoeprich's performances? I have enjoyed his playing in a range of repertoire and assume that he plays basset in this piece. I am surprised that none of the Ottensamer family appear to have recorded the work!

By he way, has the Schmidl been deleted as it is not listed?

A work I'm very fond of having played the second violin part as a student. I remember we had four very good clarinettists that year so the work was divided amongst them!

I've yet to hear a BAD recorded performance of this wonderful work.

Alpie - I think the Antony Pay version is with the AAM Chamber Ensemble, not the ASMF.

                Sorted.

You can listen later, but be careful not to leave it too long as it might disappear. Anyone know the current policy for keeping old episodes of BAL/record review available? Can you only get the last five episodes of BAL/RR now?:

Only because our good friend LMcD told me of the omission.
