It's sounding like Fassbaender at the moment, but she's too wobbly for my taste.

Güra sounded like a good library choice. I like his Schöne Müllerin and may now get this Schwanengesang - pity it's download only. It was odd to me that she ended up recommending a tenor but along the way never mentioned Peter Schreier with Andras Schiff (unless I missed it). In his Gramophone review of the Güra, Richard Wigmore compared those two versions and ultimately decided: "Schreier and Schiff would still be my tenor choice." I enjoyed the review but quite a few versions I like were not even mentioned, eg Michael Volle, Siegfried Lorenz, Bryn Terfel.

For me, singers whose voices are excessively 'coloured' (e.g. Tomlinson) just don't work for lieder. That's one reason why Fischer Dieskau is so 'right'. I also thought James Gilchrist very good...and so it seems did the reviewer. I'm very happy that Werner Güra 'won' for that same reason, though I don't feel the need to get it. Yes, why did Peter Schreier not get a mention? He too has an unforced and very direct delivery.
IMO superb.Last edited by ardcarp; 03-02-19, 17:44.

Sorry to be replying to my own post, but may I seriously recommend lieder lovers to listen to the above link (Schreier and Schiff) recorded at a live recital. It is hard to imagine its being done with better characterisation and sheer artistry....anywhere by anyone. A personal view of course.
Good to hear the songs with some text:
