Giulini recording (no details on Presto site, but soloist mentioned by Barbirollians in #16) identified:

    Sergei PROKOFIEV (1891–1953)
    Violin Concerto No.1 in D Op.19
    1 I. Andantino [9.12]
    2 II. Scherzo: Vivacissimo [3.53]
    3 III. Moderato [7.49]
    Nathan Milstein, violin
    Philharmonia Orchestra
Recorded: 17–19.X.1962, No.1 Studio, Abbey Road, London
Producer: Richard C. Jones · Balance engineer: Christopher Parker P 1966/2005* Angel Records

This comes from a review of the Giulini set:

Milstein’s Prokofiev from 1962 is disappointing. It’s a half-hearted affair that lacks involvement. Perhaps he was just having a off-day. For those wanting to hear the violinist in this concerto, they would find more rewards in seeking out the performance from 1954 with Vladimir Golschmann and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra.

PS Yup - not as "frantic" as I'd "remembered"

This was my first Prok 1 - now gone it seems. The only other in my 'library' is Szigeti with Beecham in 1935 on LP.

      Time for something new methinks.

I can sympathise! Although I've dug out many recordings of Concerto No.1 it's actually the 2nd Concerto I've listened to the most. (Especially the slow movement of the 2nd Concerto!)

Still a great record! One day, it'll come out on cd.

                  - pesky varmints, ain't 'em?

Amongst the very first batch of CDs I ever bought (back in 1985) was the Mintz/CSO/Abbado: superb performances, wonderful recordings.

I Have just one recording of Prok vc1 that I've had for donkey's years - Kyung-Wha Chung, London Symphony Orchestra, André Previn. I like it very much. I shall not be adding to it. I will limit myself to two music purchases per month and there is no urgency here.

KWC is marvellous in these works . I have managed to get a secondhand copy of the Stern/Ormandy recordings so shall look forward to hearing how different they are to his earlier traversals.

I'm surprised that there's no recording by Tasmin Little. As a young thing, she played both concertos with Docklands Sinfonietta (c.1990, first or second season?) at St John's Smith Square.

A BaL coming up is a great way to make you focus on a work. I've listened to the recordings I have:

                            Szigeti/Stiedry (1940)
                            Oistrakh/von Matačić (1954)
                            Bell/Dutoit (1992)
                            Josefowicz/Dutoit (1999)

All with something to offer but I'll go for Oistrakh in good sounding 1954 Abbey Road mono with LSO.

I had tickets to see him in the Prokofiev No.1 and the Beethoven in late 1974, he died just before so I never heard him either.

Igor's Prokofiev No.1 is listed as the Moscow Radio Symphony on the Melodia LP but I'm never very sure about which of the various Moscow orchestras is which. I wish David had recorded the Prokofiev and Igor the Khachaturian.

I totally agree with Bryn about the Saga David Oistrakh recording with Kondrashin (6/1953), it's truly wonderful, IMHO unsurpassed, it sends shivers up the spine. I think it's the same recording on DG's "Original Masters - David Oistrakh - Concertos And Encores"

The David Oistrakh recordings I have are:
Kondrashin USSR Radio (?State) Symphony 6/1953
                              Von Matacic LSO 21/11/1954
                              Moscow Philharmonic 7/9/1963 (Brilliant live)
                              Sanderling Berlin Symphony 19/4/1971

Milstein/Golschmann Saint Louis Symphony seems to have slipped through the net, it was in the EMI Icon set and Stern also recorded it with the NYPO under Mitropoulos in 1958, a CBS recording that has been on CD under Stern - Early Recordings.

There is an old record of Igor playing the work conducted by Eugene Goossens conducting the Philharmonia. It's on my list of recordings on vinyl by Igor Oistrakh that I intend to have transferred to cd this year. I have the Tchaikovsky already, conducted by his father and the Beethoven is currently in the pipeline. I've waited so long for an Igor Oistrakh box set that's not materialised that I've decided to be pro-active!
