I saw Oistrach play this in the RFH in November 1972, with Philharmonia/Svetlanov. An encore was called for, Oistrach held up two fingers to conductor and orchestra and they played the 2nd movement again.

I have one recording only, the Mordkovitch/Järvi.

Wow! Alas, I was too young to have heard David Oistrakh in the flesh although I heard Igor many times.

Just realised that I already have the Igor Oistrakh recording on a VOX recording. The USSR TV and Large Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky. I have a feeling I picked this up in New York.

There was an HMV Melodiya recording coupled with David O in the Khachaturian I think. Not sure if the same .

Found it - reviewed in Gramophone May 1969 by EG who held it to be good but not up with his father's recording.Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra /Rozhdestvensky accompanied .

Thanks, Barbie. That was always Igor's curse. He was always perceived as not being quite as good as his father.

Way back I had an Oistrakh recording with Russian forces on a Saga LP (XID 5160). The conductor was Kondrashin but the orchestra was given as the "Soviet Radio Symphony Orchestra". I loved the performance but the LP refused to track successfully at the climaxes. These days I have a CD with both the same soloist and conductor but with the orchestra credited as the "Moscow Philharmonic". From memory, I reckon it's the same performance. However, the Saga LP claims to have been issued in 1963 and the recording on the CD was of a performance on the 7th of September that year, so perhaps the LP had an earlier recording. Anyway, I definitely reckon David Oistrakh's playing of this concerto.

Does this mean that I should have checked which Oistrakh is which in the list I compiled?
                    Apologies for sloppiness if so.
I'll correct the entries as necessary.

Difficult to be sure. Saga was not exactly unknown for misnaming orchestras. The CD is of a live performance and issued by Brilliant Classics under licence from Gostelradiofund, Russian Federation.

The plot thickens. MCD 62014 looks to have the same recording as XID 5160 and has rather different timings to the Brilliant Classics disc (CD 43 from their "Legendary Russian Soloists of the 20th Century" box) which is also to be found as a download on QOBUZ.
