Thanks Tony. Brooklyn Rider not easy to find (as usual), but now ordered. Loved their Beethoven op131 and Bartok 2.

Between buses back from London this morning I had a 50-minute connection break in Windsor, so I did a quick trawl round the charity shops. Only one had anything of vague interest, and that was not an especially low price. It was a four-disc sleeved set called "simplydebussy". I had seen such sets before and passed them by since they offered so little detail of who was performing what. This time I was able to delve deeper. Though even the rear inserts offer no accreditation, the inside of the single fold 'booklets' do. It turned out the recordings were all sourced from the Denon catalogue and included Krivine conducting the Nocturnes and La Mer. I was hooked. The fouth disc holds chamber music and the String Quartet is played by the Carmina Quartet. Robert Layton, in his Gramophone review of its original coupling with the Ravel, was somewhat put off by their tempi in the first movement but did not question their commitment to the music. I have not got round to listening to that disc yet, but will.

The customer reviews there are somewhat less than informative. I might post something there after listening to the whole set. The Krivine directed performances tend towards the lush, but of their kind are pretty good. Looking forward to listening to Beroff's Preludes.

So far, enjoyed that opening 1931 performance (didn't catch the name of the group), Quartetto Italiano, and best so far for me, Quatuor Danel.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think the Ebene extracts sound a bit distant and lacking something?

The Calvet 4tet, BeefO - as found in the boxed set "Debussy - His First Performers" (which is on its way to me from the Magpie as I write).

I'm greatly revelling (or "debussing") in the variety of performances - confirming what I've often felt about this piece; that it's one of those pieces that doesn't have a duff recording.

Thanks ferney. I think you're right, the performances of this work are very good - spoilt for choice. I fancy adding the Quartetto Italiano recording.

The first one I acquired years ago - go for it! It's FAB!

Lots of very good performances on this BaL, I will definitely be listening again.

Have to say theirs were the extracts I warmed to! Ordered.

I don’t know the Fauré work with which it is coupled as an added bonus.

Re last time winners the Belcea: she played a bit early on without much comment, then no further reference. Or did I sleep through a further mention?

Certainly were. One of those pieces that def. warrants multiple versions in one's collection. I was very taken with the Talich's account - even if Laura T; thought it 'a little too dramatic' in places - or words to that effect. I would have liked an extract from the Melos, as it's one I have never heard, but I gather is a bit of a benchmark?
