Between buses back from London this morning I had a 50-minute connection break in Windsor, so I did a quick trawl round the charity shops. Only one had anything of vague interest, and that was not an especially low price. It was a four-disc sleeved set called "simplydebussy". I had seen such sets before and passed them by since they offered so little detail of who was performing what. This time I was able to delve deeper. Though even the rear inserts offer no accreditation, the inside of the single fold 'booklets' do. It turned out the recordings were all sourced from the Denon catalogue and included Krivine conducting the Nocturnes and La Mer. I was hooked. The fouth disc holds chamber music and the String Quartet is played by the Carmina Quartet. Robert Layton, in his Gramophone review of its original coupling with the Ravel, was somewhat put off by their tempi in the first movement but did not question their commitment to the music. I have not got round to listening to that disc yet, but will.

Thanks ferney. I think you're right, the performances of this work are very good - spoilt for choice. I fancy adding the Quartetto Italiano recording.

I'm greatly revelling (or "debussing") in the variety of performances - confirming what I've often felt about this piece; that it's one of those pieces that doesn't have a duff recording.
