or the DVD is said to be available for £16.50 direct from http://www.spav.co.uk/

With a bit of luck, it will turn up on BBC FOUR again.

Sad that the previously mentioned 70s AAM account didn't even merit an extract.

I may have missed half of what the reviewer was saying but so few recordings were compared out of so many. Michael Chance sounded great but I did not like the soprano whom the reviewer praised to the skies. Pity. I was very much looking forward to this BaL.

Ah, so it wasn’t just me who couldn’t work out what it was.

Just ordered the SPAV DVD from spav.co.uk. The Paypal receipt has come through but nothing yet from SPAV itself (R A J VENDOME ). Just hoping the audio has an LPCM option though surround might also be interesting.

It appears to be the "Schola Pietatis Antonio Vivaldi".

What is the world coming to, when contributors to this forum (especially the HIPP aficionados) don't know who SPAV are?

I don't think it's her speed of delivery in itself that's the problem. I find that she mumbles. Some consonants just get lost, so I struggle to work out what the word is, and then with the rapid delivery I find I have lost a whole sentence or several before I know it. This must be a bit like what English sounds like to a foreigner who doesn't understand it. A pity, because when I can understand it, I find what Ms Gill has to say very interesting.

Thanks for the info, Bryn. I remember seeing that documentary on BBC Four. Apologies for my ignorance - I sit here shame-faced!

I hope that the SPAV receipt wasn't sent by a SPIV.

O.k., so I had to Google SPAV. Come to think of it, I may well have the BBC FOUR broadcast on DVD-R, but both sound and picture will hopefully be better on the official DVD. What a crazy discrepancy between the spav.co.uk and Amazon/ebay prices. That's if the DVD does actually arrive.

Who is this review aimed at?

Actually, it sounds like she's giving a lecture and addressing dry, dusty academics. It also sounds like she's had a personality bypass. Where do they get these people from? They are addressing the general listener and need to lighten up a little.

No, no. She was addressing the BBC Radio 3 audience, and we all know what a hypereducated, stuck-up bunch they are. Actually, I was quite relaxed about her delivery, and her conclusions. That's 2 more Vivaldi Gloria recordings added to my assemblage.

Thing is she did explain what SPAV meant but perhaps so quickly most missed it...

'Interesting' that a profoundly deaf percussionist's interpretation was given prominence over that of a forensic lip reader. I am not a lip reader but would think a plosive "p" should be fairly easily differentiated from a "w". A tad O|T, I know, but we were considering Vivaldi's women.
