It's surprising how some works come round again quite quickly while many others languish unconsidered.....

The Our Summer BaL is an in-Forum feature for the summer weeks without a R3 "proper" BaL, Mike; the Franck Sonata hasn't featured on the "legit" BaL since ... a long time ago.

The Chung/Lupu disc won in 2001 but it was a coupling on the Decca issue that topped the BaL for the Ravel Introduction and Allegro.

I suspect that the Ravel was what I bought the CD for, though I also have it (the Ravel) in the Decca Classic Sound 1997 release of the original L'oiseau lyre coupling with Debussy, Roussel, and Ropartz.

The Franck is not a great favourite, but I was incidentally part of a performance involving Ida Haendel, as page-turner for her pianist (younger than Turini would have been) when she gave a recital in Fredericton (New Brunswick, Canada) when I was at university there as a graduate student. (Undoubtedly mentioned before, but still a memorable evening!)

Of a handful of versions in my collection Isabelle Faust would be the choice, fresh, mellow and authoritative.

I remember the Radio 3 programme Man of Action from the 70s, a kind of predecessor of Private Passions. The guest chose the Franck Sonata which was one of the few pieces of recorded music they had in the PoW camp where he had been interned in the Second World War. He commented that the last movement allegretto poco mosso with the sensuous intertwining of the two instruments was the nearest thing the blokes had to sexual intercourse.

Sorry, I took the comments on 2001 above without checking. It explains why I didn't remember the programme!

That is indeed an enormous bonus - a work far to rarely performed, IHMO.

I picked up a copy of the sheet music a few weeks ago. I'm hoping th BaL will inspire me to practise the piano part.

I forgot to mention that I have the Pike/Rosco recording. It be good if this won I think because, the Debussy Sonata BaL, it was the winner!

It rather depends on the type of review. If it's the forensic sticking to the score then, like the Debussy, they may well win again. Sadly the problem with so large and strong a field is that the result will inevitably be somewhat arbitrary and fine versions that have something original to say will probably fall by the wayside. However, hopefully we will have an interesting journey.

FWIW my favourite of my 16 versions isn't the Pike, it's Grumiaux's early versio with Istvan Hajdu.
