Mahan Esfahani has previously "done" the Franck Symphony and The Four Seasons. IIRC, he didn't at all like our responses to his review of the Franck, so this one might be fun!

I'd "remembered" that he'd tweeted something less than complimentary about the Forum's response to his BaL and that this had been reproted on the relevant Thread. Completely fictitious, and I take back the suggestion and apologise.

Great list but my absolute favourite (and I suspect not only mine) is not on it. It is a version by which I got to know the work in the early 70s via a Melodiya LP with David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter recorded live at a concert in the Grand Hall of the Moscow in 1969 with good sound and the exciting feeling of a real performance and happily free of live concert background noises sometimes encountered. The LP lost quality through much playing. Soviet Melodiya discs tended to be not of peak quality in the first place and when CDs arrived I kept a keen eye out for a digital issue. I had to wait a long time. It wasn't until 2003 that a 5CD Melodiya Oistrakh collection appeared which I immediately snapped up. A marvellous set which is no longer available and therefore obviously cannot be listed, although second-hand individual discs are still around. I have several fine other versions but this is still my winner and indeed a favourite recording full stop.

Yes! I had that Lp as well and it ended up being well worn. Wasn't it coupled with the Brahms d minor sonata?
