BaL 13.10.18 - Franck: Violin Sonata in A

    09.30
Building a Library: Mahan Esfahani surveys the recordings of Franck's Violin Sonata
The Sonata in A major by César Franck is one the greatest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. It was written in 1886, when César Franck was 63, as a wedding present for the 31-year-old violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. The piece is cyclic in that all the movements share common thematic threads. And it has attracted some of the finest violin and piano duos into the recording studio over the years

There's a slip there, I think, with Christian Ferras...I don't think his pianist was ever Constantin Silvestri! Pierre Barbizet perhaps?

      .

... a heroic production, Alpie - very many thanks.

It is of course a work that any Vinteuil wd listen to with particular interest. I had so hoped that there might be a recording with Charles Morel and M. Dechambre ("Mme Verdurin's favourite pianist... ".)

          Did I really say that?

Alpie! Congratulations on such amazingly sterling work! I don't know how you do it, but we are all in your debt. Thank you.

It is a wonderful sonata - I think most of us will agree on that; however - the sheer number of interpretations is staggering. I look forward to this BaL - as I usually do, actually!

Vints, I don't feel his playing is of the same quality since his affair with Saint-Loup.

Great list but my absolute favourite (and I suspect not only mine) is not on it. It is a version by which I got to know the work in the early 70s via a Melodiya LP with David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter recorded live at a concert in the Grand Hall of the Moscow in 1969 with good sound and the exciting feeling of a real performance and happily free of live concert background noises sometimes encountered. The LP lost quality through much playing. Soviet Melodiya discs tended to be not of peak quality in the first place and when CDs arrived I kept a keen eye out for a digital issue. I had to wait a long time. It wasn't until 2003 that a 5CD Melodiya Oistrakh collection appeared which I immediately snapped up. A marvellous set which is no longer available and therefore obviously cannot be listed, although second-hand individual discs are still around. I have several fine other versions but this is still my winner and indeed a favourite recording full stop.

Viewing that list it must be Franck’s most recorded work:
Two of my favourites are Perlman/Ashkenazy and Zukerman/Neikrug

Not sure if it's still available but in the Brilliant Kogan box, there's a version for violin and orchestra!

On a different topic, it seems odd to have a keyboard player as a reviewer for this, yes the piano part is very difficult but surely we need a string specialist?

In addition there are a number of recordings of the sonata adapted as a cello sonata!

Mahan Esfahani has previously "done" the Franck Symphony and The Four Seasons. IIRC, he didn't at all like our responses to his review of the Franck, so this one might be fun!
