I've been trawling the web in order to find a reasonably priced CD set of the 1950 WF performance. There are several used copies on Amazon.com, but these are not eligible for delivery to the UK.

1) The 1950 live one with Gobbi, Welitsch et al
2) The 1953 live one with Siepi, Grümmer, Edelmann, Schwarzkopf et al
3) The 1954 live one with a virtually identical cast to 1953, apart from Ernster as the Commendatore
4) The Paul Czinner film in 1954 based on the 1954 production, with virtually identical cast to (3) apart from Lisa della Casa as Elvira instead of Schwarzkopf
I don't expect any of them to be given more than the briefest of mentions by NK next week, btw.

My first exposure to the music of Don Giovanni was in the Furtwängler 1950 version, on an execrable-sounding Olympia set of LPs, which had been recommended to me by John Hunt in his London shop (I forget the name). Despite the audience noise, and the recording blips, I thought it was among the most exciting music I had ever heard - especially the Introduzione to Act 1, and the shattering climax to Act 2, with the unearthly tones of the Commendatore. Although I have heard much better recorded versions since, with much clearer detail and more precise singing, I still retain a special affection for that WF version.
