But 15,00€ from Amazon France (used). Thanks for the recommendation, BBM.

Very good! What a pity this BaL has not had many posts here. One of the best BaLs I’ve heard in a long while. I’ll be still faithful to the Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr. Two of my favourite artists in this period and genre.

Exactly! It was so good, I actually wanted to listen to what she was saying, rather than posting comments as she was saying it. Superb balance of enthusiasm, information, and insight - how it should be done.

I could have had more pointers to what to listen to in order to hear the differences in the performances. But that was very likely to be my problem. I very much enjoyed this BaL.

Yes the clips persuaded me to plump for Andrew Manze and Richard Egarr - I've ordered "The Art of the Violin" after your recommendation (MDT have it for £20).

Seconded - I wasn't going to listen but am very glad that I did. I liked the fact that the Grumiaux excerpt was treated with respect, when other BaL reviewers I can think of might have been inclined simply to dismiss it. Glad that I'd just bought the Manze but was greatly taken with the winner.

Agreed. I too will stay with Manze and Egarr not just because of their playing but I also love the warm acoustic which Harmonia Mundi give them. I have collected all of the discs that they have made for HM - each one is a gem, including later repertoire by Mozart and Schubert.

                      - I was rather taken by the warm austerity of Grumiaux (as so often with this artist), and whilst I don't think I'd like to hear a whole CD'sworth of this (especially if the harpsichord part is as "straight" throughout as it was played in this excerpt) I wouldn't mind at all hearing this on occasion.

She was fair about Menuhin, too, and positive about Petri's recording of the transcription for recorder. In fact, there was so much wonderful playing illustrated that I think this will end up being rather an expensive BaL for me!

Apologies to those who noticed my "deliberate mistake" highlighting the wrong recording of the top recommendation in the OP.

                        Now corrected.

I had acquired all of those discs individually and yes I Second the recommendation.
I heard Edgar and Manze in concert about 15 years ago at the University of Chicago recital series and they performed La Folia. A very memorable concert

The Andrew Manze, Richard Egarr set "The Art of the Violin" is available from "ebay UK international sellers" for £19. It wasn't obvious if UK buyers were able to take up that deal or not - the same seller under "non-international" was selling for £35, so I'm guessing not, but the seller only explicitly says that Germany is excluded (!) Rather than chancing a purchase from this quagmire I paid MDT the extra £1...

Listening to it next to some other Corelli performances, I'm convinced that this is indeed excellent and presents a fresh approach and I think will stand up to repeated listening. Haven't listened to the BAL yet but plan to once I have the patience to get around the occasional geographic restrictions

Interesting although I found it a little boring. Some dodgy intonation at times and a lot was recorded with mic's in another country, but still it was a worthwhile listen.
