Interesting that no one here mentions the Chailly cycle, which I enjoyed hugely. Superb playing by the Gewandhaus, excellent Decca recording (especially in hi res), and after I raved about it (I’m not suggesting causality!) it went on to win Gramophone's Record of the Year.
Hmm. I played the survey once, then put it aside and went back to SCO/Mackerras. Perhaps I should give it another try. For big band Brahms I tend more towards Boult.

I wondered when Boult would get a mention. I like his performances and I listened to the first movement of Symphony #1 the other day and was impressed ......
My iTunes player happened to spit out the Horenstein recording made for Readers Digest with the RPO this AM on my drive to work. Petrushka won't like it--the timps are very recessed until the very end of the opening Phrase of I, when they suddenly escalate in volume--I thought it was pretty effective.
Has anyone mentioned Furtwangler? It would be my historic choice, although I haven't heard Toscanini

I think Brahms 1 needs 'Big Band'! - can do pretty pedalling as well as full frottle!
I think ferney means stop digging - he's got you on a 24 and a 36, but if you back off he won't make a federal case of it.
- not really; we're talking about posts from Stanf and Bbm: "passing mentions" from such respected Forumistas is equivalent to "considered discussion" on many another Forum!

...and should not be taken lightly. These boards are the fount of all knowledge....but
The just released (November 18, 2016) six LP box set of the four Brahms symphonies recorded direct-to-disc performed by Sir Simon Rattle and The Berlin Philharmonic before a live Philharmonie audience is as meticulously produced and presented as its existence is unlikely. Proposing to a distinguished orchestra like the Berlin Philharmonic and its conductor, a logistically, artistically and technically complex and risky project like this one would be improbable in any year, but forty years into the digital recording era, it’s miraculous, though their agreeing to it is even more so.
