I have that one, too. It makes no sense at all to have inaudible timps to set the work in motion but I know some that do.

      .
Yes indeed, it's a superb performance!
It's actually quite difficult for me to be unbiased about this recording, because:
      1) My former pupil Andrew Clark was playing ( wonderfully) 1st horn, and
      2) I was the 'assistant/ associate' producer to
David Murray, who was, of course, the chief/overall producer.

Anyone for Cantelli/Philharmonia? Moments of it still send shivers down my spine. Shame its only in Mono.

Yes - quite wonderful. I am afraid I do not share the enthusiasm for the Norrington . An LCP recording that did not come off to my ears.

Marek Janowski and the Pittsburgh SO fit the bill for me. Indeed, the Janowski set as a whole is wonderfully satisfying.

It's also available in an inexpensive Sony box set of all Brhams' symphonies and more: "Walter conducts Brahms". I like it a lot, but I haven't compared everything in Alpensinfonie's admirable list.

P.S. why does V mean download? I assumed it meant "vinyl" before i checked.

Absolutely. Great performances and playing, and probably the best available in DSD and multichannel.

Well it was and can still be bought from Amazon for example but it has disappeared from Presto and I assume like the Leon Fleischer Beethoven and Brahms concerto box has been deleted in physical form.

Pristine has released a fair amount of Walter conducting Brahms in Concert from the late 40s and early 50s, pretty revelatory for someone like me who only knew the late, post heart attack Stereo Columbia recordings

I think that Mal was asking why the letter "V" is used (rather than, say, "D") for "Download"?

D might be misinterpreted as "digital", which would be misleading, as all current formats, apart from vinyl, are digital.

But "V" was misinterpreted, by me, as Vinyl.

Maybe using "*" would work; people would (hopefully) see that as indicating a footnote, go to the bottom of the page, and see "* = download only".

Yes but Mal's post also referred the physical availability of the Columbia SO /Walter Brahms recordings and it seems they have been deleted in CD format despite the box only having one out three years ago or so.
