Did we sort out whether it was music theatre or an operetta? I wasn't well yesterday, so didn't hear the whole thing.

Why were they so disparaging about the Bernstein/LSO '89 performance? On the too few clips given of this benchmark performance I thought it sounded wonderful, a lot better than the "cheap opera pit" versions that it was compared to.
I liked the clip of singers acting vs. actors singing, but disagreed totally with their appreciation of the actors singing. I thought they were going to say, "that was grating, actors can't sing". But, no, they seemed to like their amateur "spirit". Maybe, being experts, they hear the music in their heads, and just look at the acting performance. But an amateur like me actually needs the musical qualities to be there.
They again disparaged Bernstein '89 for Anderson's performance, and again it sounded wonderful to me, "brilliant in coloratura" as the Penguin guide says. Penguin gave Bernstein/LSO '89 a rosette, Gramophone gave it a gem, and Third Ear called it "the Candide for the ages". So I don't think I'm hearing qualities that aren't there. BAL can keep their "drag act at a tavern" performances, I'll be adding the triumphal and tuneful Bernstein/LSO '89 to my library.Last edited by Mal; 22-04-18, 11:28.

They are both contained in this rather handsome - if not terribly cheap - reissue:
CD version (cheap) at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leonard-Ber...dide+bernstein
DVD (not quite so cheap) at: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Leonard-Ber...dide+bernstein
Hope that makes sense!

That CD (cheap) version tempts me, it's the one getting the rosette in Penguin (DG 474 472-2), and the following seems to confirm it is the Abbey road studio version:
There seem to be some of Lenny's best performances going at bargain prices at the moment. Maybe it's a "come on" for that big box set! I just bought his live Mahler: Symphony No.5 with the Wiener Philharmoniker new for £3.99 (eBay, also Amazon.)

1. Was this one reviewed in the BAL - https://www.amazon.co.uk/BERNSTEIN-L...t_sims?ie=UTF8
2. How much import duty would there be from the USA, and how easy would it be to play the Blu Ray on kit aimed at the U.K. markets? Maybe the format “issues” are too significant.
