My first recording is Not available, apparently. It was an lp by the Collegium Aureum, an early HIP ensemble. My LPs were destroyed in a flood in 1985 and it was nla so I wound up acquiring a few others, with my favorites being Klemperer and the OAE disc from an issue of BBC Music Magazine. I hunted for the Collegium Aureum Version on CD and when I finally found it I had to admit that it had been superseded by the newer additions.
With the advent of the big box CD reissues of the past decade I have managed to acquire a few more versions. I have enjoyed all of them. This is such incredible music, surely the acme of the genre. The version that I listen to most frequently is the Stuttgart Winds, on the Tacet label, a Blu Ray that unabashedly places the listener in the middle of the ensemble in the multichannel mix. Of course that is an unnatural perspective, but it’s fascinating, especially the amount of low level detail from the bassoon and clarinet.
