Good news for BeefO: it's a Twofer (part of the Gateshead "Free Thinking" wotsit). This - together with the fact that I have the Richter/Britten recording - means I won't be listening.

You misunderstand me, ferney. I'm happy with all formats; onefer, twofer, live from the south bank, roadshow etc.

I'm reminded that one forumite refused to listen to the recent Boulez Marteau Sans Maitre BaL because of the modern format and missed one of the best BaLs in a long time. Beware ferney, it could be you next

Oh no! Not a two-fer! I hate those ones!

It was me, also, then - I didn't listen to that BaL, either - and had such a productive (and, therefore, enjoyable) Saturday morning as a result that I nearly decided to stop listening to RR from then on. I do wonder if I waste my mornings tuning in religiously - the rewards from the programme so often seem to be outweighed by annoyance and frustration. This Forum Thread is more valuable to me.

            I don't get this!? How's it on Sony? It's a Decca/London release.

Regarding car sound systems, best try before you buy. My friend has just bought a brand spanking new fully loaded Audi A7 and the sound system is not a patch on my Japanese jam-jar's system.

                - I wondered if the marketing relationship between London DECCA and RCA at the time when the recording was made might have had something to do with it?

So Prokofievy. Haven't thought that of other Britten.

Did Richter play this concerto much in concert?

I'm glad that this has come up for consideration, since I have not really paid that much attention to it up to now. I have just listened to my only recording, which I acquired a few years via EMI's bargain-price 37CD Britten Collector's Edition. Leif Ove Andsnes with Paavo Järvi and CBSO make a brilliant job of it, recorded live at Symphony Hall in 1997 in good sound. (On the same disc you get Ida Haendel with Paavo Berglund and BSO in the Violin Concerto). Richter does seem to be the one to have but I'm not sure I need two recordings.

Quite so. I may be not so "quite so" if it was announced that a BaL would be live from the Pentagon shopping centre in Chatham! One has to draw the line somewhere....

But on the other hand... the background noise of "night before" broken wine bottles being swept up would be no different from plates and cutlery being cleared away in Gateshead!

                              You don't - provided you've got Richter/Britten!
