BaL 3.02.18 - Beethoven: Piano Sonata no. 30 in E major, Op.109
Hmm, having seen/heard him recently, the word "oafish" is not one which comes to mind in relation to Richard Goode........
Quite. I really can't think of a pianist less "oafish". A player of the utmost sensitivity, lyricism and intelligence - a "pianist's pianist", as the saying goes. I would place his compete Beethoven sonatas right at the top of the pile, even if I prefer others for individual sonatas. I still remember the struggle to get it: at the time, it was over a hundred pounds, which I couldn't afford, but I knew someone who knew someone who had it..........It took months of Iago-like scheming before I could get my trembling hands on it.
As for Gilels, I haven't listened to that in a few years, but my memory is that much of his set (I think he recorded all but 2 or 3; he died of some medical cock-up in a Soviet hospital before he could finish) - my memory was that the sound was often quite hard and pingy, especially on the high notes. Quite tough on the ears. I can't remember of opus 109 suffered from this, but the Hammerklavier and others certainly did).
... ah, mine says : You purchased this item on 26 Jun 2014.
.
Mine says May 24th 2014. My cheapo order for the 4 disc set currently reads "We're cancelling your order". Trouble is, it's been like that for some time. We shall see. The hazards of ordering in haste when away from one's discs.

... if you've already got the eight-CD icon box, surely you don't need the four-CD box whch merely replicates those CDs??
... sorry, my misunderstanding. But hey, a couple of pounds saved for you!
Too early for celebration. Te current order status reads "Attempting to Cancel. Your order is being prepared for shipment. We are attempting to cancel it now. We’ll e-mail you as soon as this status changes.".
He liked the new instruments of the time. Most composers do when they get the chance...
Indeed - and wrote so well for them. He even managed to put together a listenable piece for the Panharmonicon, so he should have coped well enough with a Steinway!
Joshing aside, this morning's programme kept emphasizing just how endlessly astonishing this work is - and so many performances that do it justice in so many different ways. I suspect that I shall be spending quite a lot of money as a result of this!

Having spend rather a lot on this and the other Beethoven percussive keyboard sonata recordings over the years, and having today foolishly attempted to spend a little more on a recording I already have, and already having all five recommended recordings, I do not plan on spending any more on recordings of this particular work at the moment. Who knows, however, what the morrow might bring?
