I guess the field was so massive, she just didn't get her head around period pianos, apart from that one clip. I always ask myself the question, "What would Ludwig have thought about the modern Steinway?" And I always answer myself by saying "He'd have loved it!" Not very HIPP, I admit. Whilst crowded LH chords (of which there are many in Op 109) sound a bit gruff on a modern piano, melodic material just sings out...whereas on early pianos melodic lines..to my ears anyway...sound thin and die away too quickly.

I was amused by her comments on Barenboim. Very perceptive, IMO.

We'll just have to agree to differ on RG - we clearly agree on Annie Fischer, though:)
Fair enough. It was more an attempt to convey a more aggressive attack of the keys... Yes, it's always pleasing to see an older disc scooping the plaudits like Fischer's; a new discovery for me but one I have been returning to all week.

I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Naaah! He'd've hated the monochrome "modern" piano - bygguring up his harmony, incapable of the meticulous Una corda shading that the Music requires.

He'd've loathed the taming of the sounds and bleached timbres.

I tell myself this all the time!

                .

... he might have been intrigued by the 'modern' piano.

I wonder what he would have written for it?

Certainly not the music which he did write for the instruments he knew...

                  Hiya ardcarp,

John Lill once said to me that he didn't think that Bach would have turned down a modern bathroom. I'm my view I find it hard to believe that Beethoven would have been anything but bowled over by a modern Steinway.

... and what would he have composed for it?

Solomon, Gilels and the last Brendel recording also received favourable reviews . The 4 disc Fischer Icon box for £1.06 must be one of the bargains of all time on Amazon .

... I was very taken by the Gilels, which I was embarrassed to find I didn't have : now ordered. The Annie Fischer is great ; I have the (slightly more expensive, but still great value) eight CD icon box -

Wasn't moved by the Brendel this time....

Brainstorm here - I though 4 Cds was small for that Icon box- wonder what the 4 Cd box contains ?

                            ... this looks a likely suspect -
