Just re-read Richard Fairman's Gramophone Collection review from Sept 2010, he chose the Bonynge/Sutherland/Pavarotti and dismissed the Pritchard: In the move to the recording studio, some of the joie de vivre of live performances has been lost and the cast includes a Nemorino who did not sing the role at Covent Garden.

Anyone heard both and like to comment?

Sarah Lenten entirely right in my opinion . When first reviewing the Pritchard Alan Blyth described the Bonynge as flaccid in comparison . Cotrubas gives Sutherland a lesson in acting as does Domingo to Pavarotti .

I bought the Bonynge on the back of that Gramophone collection and as beautifully as it is sung it is very boring .

        Thanks Barbs,
I'm much more a Domingo fan anyway, Pavarotti has a lovely voice but the lack of vocal acting is always and issue and I love Cotrubas' singing, I find her Traviata really special. I'll probably give it a go.

            Me too.
And -yes - Cotrubas's Traviata is exceptional.

As for the opera in question, not one I would want to own, but the BaL was sort of entertaining.

Domingo for me too, usually. But I'm not convinced that he's right for Nemorino. A touch too weighty, even in his (relative) youth?

Very pleased with the Pritchard, thanks Barbs. Cotrubas in particular is excellent.

Discovered I have the Pritchard set on fine LPs. It's very fine, as mikealdren says - Cotrubas yes, Domingo too.

Planning to see the current Met production at a cinema in Oxford in 2 weeks time. Such joyful music.

                      (CD/DVD)

That is a WONDERFUL Elisier d'amore set. And it can be had on DVD, and a GREAT DVD too. This one is my all time favorite.
